November 2010

Week 1 has begun with terrible weather, torrential rain, high winds and very low temperatures, everything we dont like!!! However the fishing has been surprisingly good, buzzers fished high in the water, cormorants, diawl bachs and crunchers have all been very productive and at times we have had fish rising freely, very unusual in these conditions. The top lure is definately the hot head damsel fish on a floater, midge tip or intermediate but kept quite high in the water and retrieved slowly. Again we have had plenty of bigger fish being taken, overall the fish have been fighting extremely hard, anglers with faulty knots have paid the price!! Week 2 has started very well, the weather has been mostly terrible but the fishing great, anglers had great buzzer sport yesterday in the afternoon when the sun popped out and anyone persevering with a damsel is getting good sport, we are getting some fantastic looking fish caught now, these are the bigger fish stocked throughout the year that are trying hard to pack weight on for the winter, check the gallery for examples. We are on the countdown to the end of season , which is sunday the 28th of november, still time to get a double before we close! Week 2 has seen some pretty good fishing, sometimes a little slow but when the fish come on, as long as you have the right tactics, the sport has been really good. Best tactics have been black/green lures on an intermediate, fished slowly in the top 4 feet, or buzzers under a bung, best colour  again being black. Regular angler Alan Brownlee had a lovely 8lb rainbow then a 13lb fish, Ian Dobie had 2 doubles on consecutive days first one at 10lb 4oz then the next at 11lb 12oz, well done guys! Well guys the weather has beaten us, the winter competition is cancelled as the fishery has ice over 1" thick, we are now officially closed for the 2010 season, thanks to all who visited Bangour and i hope to see you next season, opening day is saturday the 19th march 2011, best to book your space quickly, any clubs wishing to book for next season should contact me as weekends are going fast!

March 2011

Opening day was very cold and the fish were on and off all day, the main tactics were intermediate lines and lures, first limit bag of the season went to Livingston angler Peter Sinclair who weighed in before 10.30, well done Pete. The heaviest fish of the day fell to Billy Scott 10lb 4oz, Colin Stewart 13lb and Alex Wilkie at 14lb. The sunday was far better with warmer weather and longer spells of sport, the buzzer action started big time with anglers catching loads of fish in the shallower water with the buzzers around 2 feet under a bung. As the weather has warmed up daily there has been the odd bit of top of the water action, roll on the spring. Week 2  seen a rise in temperature which seen some brilliant top of the water sport, mainly to olive and dark brown buzzers and emergers. Buzzers fished a few feet down on indicators have been by far the best method, the lure guys have really struggled this last few days. Regular angler Tony Pryde was on form this week fishing dries where he was absolutely hammering fish on cdc,s, this included two fish of 11lb 4oz and 11lb 12oz, well done Tony! The week ended with very high winds, this has made stopped the top of the water sport for now, heres hoping it settles back down. The big fish board seen 27 fish over the 5lb mark with the heaviest of 14lb, the average weight for the month was 3lb 2oz.

april 2011

April started with the troutmasters competition, this proved to be quite a difficult day as the wind was howling and it was very cold, forcing the placing of the anglers around one corner of the fishery to be able to cast, the buzzer proved to be by far the best method, fished very shallow under the bung, best colours were olive, black and brown. Intermediate lines and lures still caught fish with the yellow dancer and damsel being the top set ups, overall it was definately a buzzer weekend. First place at the troutmasters went to  Eddie collins from Stirling, Eddie was very consistant and caught fish from every platform he fished, anyone who could do that on such a difficult day was a worthy winner. In Second place was no other than Coatbridge angler Alex Wilkie, Alex was also very cinsistant hooking fish from every platform, the only problem was Alex kept dropping the fish, this was to cost Alex the competition. Third place went to local angler Stevie McGowan who also caught fish consistantly, the junior winners were first place local young angler Calum Stephens and second place Fife angler Cameron Currie, best fish of the day was caught by East Calder angler Alan Miller with a lovely condition 13lb rainbow. Thanks to all the guys who attended and well done to the winners. Week 2 started with a very hot and still weekend, but with loads of fish rising, again the buzzer proved to be the top method again fished shallow under a bung, regular buzzer guru Tony Pryde really had the tactics sussed and made catching fish look extremely easy, well done Tony!  We have had lots of bigger fish showing inluding a beautiful 13lb rainbow for A Beattie, a 12lb 4oz rainbow for Derek Risk and a 12lb 12oz rainbow for Jim Simpson, the really big guns have yet to show up this season so far, heres hoping!!! Sorry the website hasnt been kept up to date guys, but we have had no phones or broadband for over a week, we have a temporary fix, so i will try and keep things rolling. Weeks 2 and 3 have seen some really changeable winds, blowing from all angles and changing the fishing dramatically, there have been days when you could not catch a fish on anything else except buzzers, then the following day almost impossible with anything except lures. When we have had a bit of heat and cloud cover the rises have been brilliant, on one afternoon i was absolutely hammering fish on an olive cdc, couldnt pull myself away to cut the grass!! We have had some bigs boys showing again recently, one of which was a very large rainbow hooked from the pier that stripped Ben Stewart from stirlings full flyline out and broke his backing, if i come across the line Ben i will keep it for you! Another huge fish was a new fishery record caught by Joe Robb of the Tullibody Inn fishing club, this was an amazing fish of over 23lb, i couldnt get the true weight of the fish as the scales bottomed out, but well done to Joe. The Bangour fly fishing club had a great day on sunday with most of the guys catching their limit (no names mentioned of those who did not!!!!!) Jim Edwards made catching fish look so easy with an intermediate line and a black Stevie Dallas rabbit, he finished with ten fish and lost at least another twelve, but the best was a lovely double figure fish of 10lb 8oz in pristine condition, again well done guys. Some other big boys have been Andy Mcgill with an 11lb 4oz fish, S Robinson with an 11lb 3oz fish and Keith Hunter with a superb 10lb 4oz brown trout, the biggest caught this year so far, Keith also made it look easy yesterday catching fish after fish in bright sunshine on deep buzzers. The end of the month brought the SANA bank heat, this was a very difficult day with bright sunshine, 24 degrees and a cold east wind, the winner with 7 fish was Neil Young, the other 4 qualifiers were Colin Stewart 5, Euan Miller, Kenny Miller 5 and andy Dunning 5, Euan McDougal and Wullie Munn also had 5 but lost out due to the timing of the first fish caught, hard luck to you guys, you were both so close!! Well done to everyone who took part, worthy winners in very difficult conditions. The big fish board for the month showed 36 fish between 5lb and 24lb with 22 doubles caught and an average weight of 3lb 4oz.

May2011

May has started with a heatwave along with bitter cold winds, we have had brilliant hawthorn hatches but due to the bright weather the fish have been reluctant to come up, when there has been cloud cover the rises have been superb, the water has litteraly boiled, unfortunately the cloud cover has been sporadic which has made the top of the water sport happen in short bursts. As usual the intermediate lines and lures have been as consistant as ever, with the top lures the yellow and black dancers and hothead damsel. Buzzers in black, olive and brown have been best. A special mention must go to young Dale from the dead ferret fly fishers, Dale is a newcomer to fly fishing, after setting him up with a secret yellow dancer and placing him on the pier, he caught his first fish, well done Dale it is far easier froim now on! Week 2 has seen some amazing rises to hawthorns, the best hatch of hawthorns i have seen for years, sport to black dries has been incredible when the cloud cover has been present, the buzzer sport has been a little slower than i would expect at this time of year, perhaps the fish have been preoccupied with hawthorns!! Top lure has been a hothead damsel on a floating or intermediate line. We had a new record blue this week, a fantastic 17lb fish  caught by John Diamond from Dumbarton, well done. Sunday seen our open day with Angling centre Stirling and Hardy Greys, the event went well and was busy considering the poor weather, in all, over 100 people attended to try out the new sintrix rods, must say i was mightily impressed with the new range of rods. Happiest angler of the weekend had to be Euan Miller from east calder, Euan won the Sintrix rod in the raffle, his smile said it all. Thank you to everyone who attended. This sunday the 15th is the Dennis Ramage memorial day, anyone wishing to fish in this event should contact either myself or the Bangour Fly fishing club chairman, Tony Pryde, there are still a few spaces left. Dennis was a regular customer since i reopened the venue in 2007, he was one of lifes true gentlemen and an all round top bloke and was very well thought of by the staff and regulars at Bangour, he was the first honourary memberof the Bangour fly fishing club. Unfortunately Dennis passed away at the end of last year, this event will be held annually in his honour. Guys we are having serious  phone and broadband issues again , please bear with me and i will update as soon as possible. May ended with 35 fish between 5lb and 17lb with ten doubles landed, the average fish weight for the month was 3lb 5oz. Only today the broadband and phone lines are back to normal!!

June 2011

June has started with some decent weather, the high winds have at last subsided and the fish are keen to come up to the surface, the first couple of days of the month have seen some pretty good rises with fish being taken mainly on smaller patterns such as nymphs, buzzers, hoppers, traditionals, cdc,s on floating lines although if it is cold the lures on an intermediate line are still a safe bet. We are now open until 10pm. Week 2 has begun with much better weather, some of the top of the water sport, especially at night has been incredible, anglers have commented this week that they "have never seen a rise like it" the water has literally been boiling, best patterns  have been cdc,s in black, olive and claret, dry daddies have been taking loads of fish at night, some real big fish have been showing and taking, some of the bigger fish that have been taken on the dries have been S McGowan 10lb, T Pryde 12lb, A Bodi 12lb and D mathie 12lb 8oz, great to see big fish being caught of the top. Week 3 has seen some warmer weather(at times!) that has brought some terrific top of the water sport, local regular S McGowan has really been on fire this last ten days, taking his limit easily over and over again on dries, another angler worthy of a mention was youngster Sam Andrews from Glasgow, his dad brought him along and they fished a day and evening session, with Sam the top rod with 14 fish landed and as many hooked and lost, he had to throw the towel in early as his arms and body were too tired from landing fish, what a great complaint!! Regular father and son team Alec and Jamie McCulloch from carnwath have also been very consistant taking lots of fish on the surface over the last few weeks evening sessions, i think Alec is struggling to hang on to the "who,s the daddy" teeshirt, i can see Jamie wearing it next week!! stay tuned!! Best dry fly tactics are daddies, sedge patterns and cdc,s in a mixture of colours, buzzer fishing has been getting more consistant with the fish very high in the water and some anglers getting takes less than a foot under a bung. The lure anglers as always are still managing to take fish on the usual dancers and hothead damsels. At last we have had enough rain to flush the fishery through, which has meant our water is now gin clear, remember guys, it needs to be fluorocarbon or clear leader for the next few months. The big fish board showed 29 fish over the 5lb mark with 13 doubles landed, the average weight of fish for the month was 3lb 5oz.

July 2011

Week 1 has started well with plenty of limit bags being taken, especially on the dries, top dries have been cdc,s in black olive and claret and again the daddies have been consistantly taking fish, the goldhead daddy has also done very well, with fish bulging after the daddy as it is stripped, exciting stuff! Blobs pulled just sub surface have been taking a lot of fish. We have now banned blobs and lures fished under an indicator on catch and release due to fish swallowing the flies way down their throats, common sense should always prevail guys!! Top lure has been the hothead damsel.Week 2 has seen steady weather which has brought some really good top of the water sport, dry daddies, sedges and hoppers, along with cdc,s in claret, olive and black have been the most consistant, the caenis have been hatching in the evenings in large numbers and bringing fish to the boil, the fish have proven to be tricky to tempt during the hatch, but just prior and after the hatch the sport has been best. Buzzers in black with yellow cheeks and orange cheeks have also been very consistant. The hothead damsel has been the top lure by a mile fished just below the surface along with blobs in yellow and orange. Week 3 has seen some really changeable weather which has made fishing sometimes more difficult, the weekend was the summer open competition, 27 rods took part in what was the best conditions we have had for a comp, but the hardest fishing, it was definately a small fly day, the top 5 positions were all won on either dries, diawl bachs or nymphs of sorts, the lure guys really struggled, at times the fish really came on but these periods of activity were short lived. David McIntyre of Bathgate was the winner with 4 fish @ 13lb 12oz and 5 on C&R which gave him a weight of 23lb 12oz, second was Kenny Hunter from Stirling with 4 @13lb 8oz and 3 C&R for a total of 19lb 8oz, third was Gordon fisher from Fife with 4 @ 14lb 2oz and 2 C&R for 18lb 2oz. The heaviest fish of the day went to Euan McDougall of Stirling with a measly 4lb 5oz fish, the ifrst comp we have ever had without a double, the big fish seem to have switched off at the moment, in all there were only 46 fish killed for 159lb which was an average of 3lb 5oz and 14 C&R, certainly a hard day for the guys, it was apparant guys simply did not pay enough attention to the tactics of the guys catching fish!! At least we have had some rain (not as much as some places mind you) which will hopefully drop the water temperature a little and get the big boys moving again.Week 3 at last the caenis is dying away, giving us some great top of the water evening sport, G McGregor had a superb 14lb rainbow on the dries last night, great to see such big fish coming up. During the day, it is down to the weather, when there has been enought cloud cover the rises have been brilliant, fish being taken on hoppers, sedges and cdc,s in the mornings before it is too hot, the damsel has being doing very well fished on a floating or slow sink line. Some afternoons, in bright sunshine some guys have done really well by dropping down to size 14 traditionals, again, great to see fish being taken this way. The bloodworm fished on a floating line and long leader is also a fairly consistant taker of fish at the moment. The big fish board has 21 fish between 5lb and 14lb with an average weight of 3lb 5oz.

August 2011

Week 1 has started with some really clammy weather, this has put the fish on and off, when they have came to the top, the sport has been brilliant, Bangour fly fishing club had a great day on sunday with some of the regular gurus, Alan Brownlee, Tony Pryde, Colin Stewart and Ronnie Weir doing brilliantly on dries, well done, to the guys who stuck to the lures, well, what can i say!!!!!!! the dries have definately been the way to go. WE ARE NOW A HARDY  GREYS TEST CENTRE, WE WILL HAVE THE FULL RANGE OF RODS FOR TRIAL PURPOSES, IF THERE IS A ROD YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING, GIVE ME A CALL AND I WILL ARRANGE TO HAVE ONE HERE. Week 2, well what can i say, it is a long time since i have seen rain falling for such a long period, it has been raining for almost 120 hours non stop, the reservoir has risen about 6 inches and there is now a little colour in the water, hopefully it will not get too bad. The colour hasnt stopped the fish coming up, regular dry fly angler Robert Chapman from linlithgow was taking fish on tiny black dries, making it look very easy. The top lure has definately been the hotheaded damsel, fished on a floating line. Buzzer fishing has improved dramatically with lots of limit bags being taken on black or olive buzzers, sometimes only a few feet under a sighter. A mention must go to regular angler Jim Wynne from bathgate, Jim managed his personal best with a stunning 11lb 12 oz rainbow on a skinny buzzer, the fish led Jim a merry dance before he finally managed to net it, well done Jim. Regular gurus Stevie Johnston, Tony Pryde and Alan Brownlee have made fishing look easy lately, even when other anglers have struggled, they have persevered with dries and caught plenty of fish, mainly on black or claret cdc,s and hoppers during the day and the dry daddy in the evening. I managed an evening this week and had superb sport on the daddy, the best fish a blue of around 7lb which gave a great account of itself on a 5 wt. Week 3 has seen some cooler weather which has seen the lures catching more fish, the best still being the hothead damsel, although green and black is definately starting to catch up. Dries are still doing very well, black, harelug and olive being the top colours. A couple of the bigger fish have again been taken this week on dries, an 11lb 12oz fish by airdrie angler Bobby Lennon on a hopper and a 12lb 12oz fish on a cdc by regular angler Tony Pryde. Friday evening was a fundraiser for the Scottish bank team organised by one of our regulars Euan Miller, we had 25 rods take part on what turned out to be a very cold blustery evening, top rod and winner of the £50 prize money was ex international Joe Morrison with ten fish, well done Joe. On the evening we raised £375 pounds for the team, thanks to Tangles in broxburn, Glasgow angling centre, Diawa and all others who donated raffle prizes, the diawa rod was won by Tony Pryde. The end of the month seen some incredible top of the water sport, with fish rising almost all day, small black and harelug have been the most consistant takers. The big fish board showed 28 fish between 5lb and 12lb 12oz with 5 double landed and an average weight of 3lb 2oz. In all i think it is the best August i can remember for consistant top of the water sport.

September 2011

September has started well with loads of fish rising daily, sometimes they are proving a little finnicky to catch, but with patience comes rewards! Best dries have been cdc,s in black, harelug and amber, Hoppers and daddies have been very consistant. The buzzer fishing is starting to become more consistant, with the top colour black. The lure fishing is starting to take more  fish with the best  being the hothead damsel, yellow dancer and black and green lures. The fishery is now closing at 8pm, we will try to stay open late as long as possible. Week 2 has begun with some horrific weather, the winds were incredible and forced us to close for a day this week, for the soldiers who braved the elements, they were well rewarded with some fantastic top of the water sport, fish coming to the dry daddy, hoppers and cdc,s. The lures have begun to work again, with the top lure being the hothead damsel along with black lures. The buzzer sport has also been more consistant with the black buzzer being the best colour. Now that the water has cooled the fish are becoming really active and aggressive with some rod wrenching takes breaking anglers like thread!! Week 3 has seen a drop in temperatures which have brought the fish more onto the lures, the top lure being the hothead damsel yet again followed by small rabbits, fished on a floating line. There have still been some good rises when the conditions have been right and fish can be caught every day if the anglers  persevere with dries, the daddy, hoppers and cdc,s being the top patterns. We have stocked 2 exceptionally large fish this week, one of which will easily break the record, watch this space!!! J Irvine from winchburgh landed a topper of a rainbow at 15lbs 8oz on a cormorant and Paul Begbie of livingston landed a 10lb 8oz rainbow on a lure this week, we have had plenty of fish in the 5lb to 8lb start to show up, hopefully this is a sign the big fish are starting to come on for their final autumn feed up. A big congratulations to one of our regular anglers Alan Brownlee, he managed to tempt the new fishery record in a brilliant looking 26lb rainbow on a home tied damsel, well done Alan, you have waited a long time on that fish!! Dont worry guys there is still another jumbo lurking somewhere!! What an end to a month,  disabled angler Alan McConnel from galashields visited the fishery today, Alan is wheelchair bound but is still a mad keen and very independant angler, he had a great days sport which included his first double, a 15lb 8oz rainbow, if this was,nt good enought he followed it up with another jumbo of 23lb, a fantastic acheivement, well done Alan, as i have told many visiting anglers, you don,t have to cast too far from the edge to catch fish here, Alan proved this today!! check the fish on the gallery, not a great picture but one will follow showing a close up of my hand at the fish to compare the size, it was awesome. The big fish board showed 31 fish over 5lb and 6 doubles landed for the month, with an average weight of 3lb 2oz. The evening sessions have now stopped and we are back to regular 9am till 5pm.

October 2011

October has started with some really mixed weather, some days have been very cold, whilst the following days really mild. The top of the water sport has still been far better than i would expect at this time of year, scowling winds have kept fish down at times, but when the winds drop the fish have been very active. Best dries have been harelug cdc,s and hoppers. The buzzer fishing has really turned on now with the yellow cheek, black buzzer leading the way by a mile. Top lure is still the hothead damsel, closely followed by the yellow dancer and good old cats whisker. At times when the winds have been blowing a midge tip and team of diawl bachs or crunchers have been deadly. Fish in the 6lb to 8lb have really started to show now, we have had a lot of fish in this class been taken on dries, hopefully this will mean the bigger fish are switching on for a big feed up for this coming winter. Week 2 has brought some of the heaviest rain i have seen for quite some time, this has caused the water to colour up, but hasnt stopped the fish rising, when the winds have dropped we have had loads of fish rising. As the temperatures drop the lure fishing is becoming more effective, with the best lures still the hothead damsel and yellow dancer, but the rabbits in black and green are starting to work really well. Remember to wrap up well for your visit to the fishery as some guys have been caught out at how cold it can get. The water has settled nicely after a big flood and the fish have continued to rise, top patterns have been daddies black hoppers, hothead damsel, yellow dancer and rabbits in black or white. Traditionals are continuing to take fish pulled accccross the surface. Some of the big boys have started to show up now, with stories of "monsters stripping anglers to the backing" before snapping or getting free. Some of the bigger fish have been a superb 22lb rainbow taken by flakirk angler Peter Faulds on the 999 fund raising day, a 26lb rainbow taken by edinburgh angler Jimmy Fowler and a superb wils brownie pf 10lb 8oz taken by edinburgh angler Andy McGill. The big fish board for the month showed 37 fish between 5lb and 26lb with 6 doubles landed, the average weight for the month was 3lb 2oz.

November 2011

The month has started with some very mild weather, this has made fishing strange, some days small traditionals have been the best, others it has been intermediate lines and lures, some days have been very difficult, i dont know what is happening with the weather, but it is certainly having an effect on the fish. Top lures have been yellow dancer, hothead damsel and rabbits in all differant colours. Top of the water sport is really starting to slow down now, apart from the occasional day, but the fish havent been more than about 3 or 4 feet down. Some great news this week, we have been voted the best small stillwater in the country, in this years Total Flyfisher magazines annual tackle awards, a big thank you to everyone who voted for the fishery, thank you. Week 2 has started with very mixed weather, some days have been very mild whilst other days have been bitterly cold, this has made the fishing very changeable, some days intermediate lines and lures have worked best whilst other days have seen the best results with small flies near the top or fished on a sighter fished static. The fishing has also been very inconsistant, some days the fishing has been excellant, other days very difficult. The weekend seen the final of the winter team challenge, the three teams were Bangour, New Haylie and Harbor Lites, New Haylie were first, Harbor Lites second and Bangour were third, overall though the Bangour team won the winter challenge by 3lb 12oz, a very close competition indeed!! The total for the day was 95 fish killed for 312lb 12oz which gave us an average weight of 3lb 3oz overall a very good result, a further 30 fish were caught on catch and release with the top rod Willie Munn with 11 fish, well done Wullie, you made it look easy.Week 3 has seen some very mild weather for this time of year, we have had some top of the water activity lately, but generally the fish have been slightly deeper down around the 2 or 3 feet mark, lures on an intermediate have worked well at times, but static bugs under a bung have been the best killers by far. Top lures have been the yellow dancer, again the hothead damsel and rabbits. The best buzzer colour has been black with either orange or yellow cheeks, the best bug colours have been fluoro chatruese or pink tied with a bead head. The end of the month seen two competitions at the fishery, the first was the final heat of the winter challenge between Bangour, Harbor Lites and New Haylie, the eventual winners were the Bangour team by the very narrowest of margins, well done guys, but i must add you played a little too close for comfort!!! The second competition was the winter open, the weather on the day was absolutely horrendous with a biting cold, gale force wind, which made casting very difficult for certain platforms, it didnt seem to phase the man of the season Bobby Watson, Bobby took it all in his stride and caught fish consistantly around the fishery, close on his heels was his apprentice Neill Young, Neill and Bobby both had their 4 fish killed and managed another 6 on catch and release to take them out of the reach of any other anglers, another Bangour team player Tony Pryde actually had the heaviest basket of the day at 16lb 14oz but didnt manage to land a platform in the afternoon that let him capitalise on his lead, hard lines Tony, but well done to both Bobby and Neill. The heaviest fish of the day was caught by none other than Bobby Watson a fine rainbow released at 9lb 8oz, in second place was again Neill with an 8lb fish released, Bobby also managed a brownie at 11lb 8oz but as it was out of season did not count. The total for the day was 72 fish for 219lb 12oz which was a very respectable 3lb average with no blanks, which was a credit to the anglers in such difficult conditions. The big fish board for the month showed 29 fish between 5lb and 12lb with 7 doubles landed. The average fish weight for the whole season was 3lb 3oz. We are now closed for the season until march 2012, i wish everybody who visited the fishery a very happy festive season and look forward to seeing you all in  2012, i thank you all very much for your continued support throughout the year.
